Customizing your design for small spaces

When designing and planning for small spaces, there are a lot more considerations to make than if space wasn’t a pressing factor. As property sizes on the whole are getting smaller, it’s more and more likely that interior design will need to meet the requirements of limited space. And even for a larger property, space saving is a very important consideration, and one which has multiple benefits. Incorporating storage into every room reduces visible clutter; it helps a household stay more organized and provides more available space for activities, socializing or simply relaxing.

There are so many different options when it comes to picking a theme for an interior design project for the home. Some people enjoy focusing on one period look for their décor, and source wallpaper, furniture and antiques to match from a particular time period in recent history. This typically tends to be Georgian or Edwardian for example, although more recently a trend in vintage and retro style has led a rise in interior design fashion reflecting the designs of the 40’s and 50’s. However, there can be issues with this route. Many people find that whilst often sturdier and more robust, period furniture can be large, cumbersome and built for use in large rooms with high ceilings – inappropriate for use in limited spaces.

Trends in design that work really well in small spaces include the retro shabby chic look. Patterned floral fabrics teamed with up-cycled pieces of furniture and cute ornaments keep that feel of a more period design, but make the look more current and relevant. Plus, it allows for incorporation of more modern pieces of furniture alongside older pieces. This is beneficial when saving space, as modern furniture tends to take into account the need for more efficient storage. Other great looks that work well when space saving include the super-modern engineered look with sharp lines, bright colors and edgy design, and the minimalist natural look with bamboo details, soft fabrics and nude, relaxing color palettes.

These days, even the most commercial suppliers of furniture and household furnishings are taking the need for space saving into account, so when shopping around there are plenty of options to choose from to make the most of smaller rooms. Storage is absolutely essential when creating more space. It’s important to remember that every item bought for a design can incorporate some storage into it, from a bed to a coffee table, so when buying new there are plenty of smart ways to find extra room. Consider items of furniture that easily store away when not in use, such as extending dining tables and folding chairs. And thinking about the room as a 3D space really helps to remember that there are plenty more storage options on walls, above doorways and behind large objects such as sofas or units.

It’s really important to use every available bit of space. Nobody wants their home feeling cluttered or disorganized, and often a lack of space leads to disarray and the stress of not being able to find things. A room will feel relaxed, homely and organized when the most has been made of every part of it. Remember: with furniture, less is more, but when it comes to space, more really is more, so save every bit that you can.
